End of World 2012 Possibility Astronomer Says

End of World 2012 Possibility

What can possibly be more scary than an astronomer concurring to the end of the world 2012 theory?

That’s right. It maybe the right time to start worrying about the apocalypse, according to what Chris Impey, prominent NASA astronomer, has outlined as the possible “doomsday scenarios” that are all frightening and of course, massive.

According to Impey, the threat from space is very real. He means that objects floating around the solar system have very great chances of colliding with our planet, most especially because they travel at great speeds and usually traverse near the earth’s path. Even without the 2012 Doomsday predictions, Chris Impey implies, every 100 years or so a meteor crashes into the Earth with the force of a nuclear blast, and every 1,000 years or so, our planet passes through the trails of thick comets that can create firestorm conditions. These are all enough to destroy the planet, but projectiles many miles across in length are also believed to recur in a much longer span of time of 100,000 years. These large projectiles are said to hit the world’s oceans repeatedly every 100 millennia. The last large tsunami man ever saw would pale in front of what this projectile can do if it hit the planet – in comparison, the last known tsunami will look like a little overflowing bathtub.

But nothing can be much deadlier than an asteroid of massive size smashing into Earth. And that happened over 65 million years ago. A large asteroid smashed into Earth, and scientists think it caused global earthquakes, huge tidal waves and fires that blocked out the sun, subsequently killing large land animals, making some species go extinct.

Now, you may think, “Can another asteroid come and destroy the earth again?” The answer is a very chilling yes. We may not know when this will happen, or if it will occur in 2012, but it is very likely to happen. Therefore, any claims regarding celestial objects crashing into earth may have basis on truth, though scientists have not found any space object that is heading on a collision course towards earth.

NASA is searching the sky with their Spaceguard Survey to determine if there are any near earth or large celestial objects that could potentially threaten the planet. Discoveries are posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website. Today there is really no danger that can be seen from the space, so our Governments aren’t startled or anything at all.

Now what if… One day they saw an object that, without a doubt, was heading towards earth? What could the NASA do about it? While NASA doesn’t advocate the application of nukes to shoot asteroids out of the sky, they speculate it’s possible to send a rocket in space to sway the object’s trajectory off-course to avoid a collision.

But it’s not only asteroids that we have to worry about. If a supernova (a massive star burning out) occurs 30 light years from us, high-energy particles can reach our planet and destroy the ozone layer of the planet. And if we don’t have an ozone layer, our shield against the solar heat will forever be gone, which could result to global destruction. These are just some of the options in the end of the world 2012 theory – Feel free to view more articles or browse more 2012 resources.
